Palais Marbre

The luxurious Palais de Marbre, was originally built in 1971, designed also by Palumbo,

as a residence for the Governor of the National Bank, but was appropriated by Mobutu.

It is referred to by Kinois as ‘the place where Laurent Kabila was killed’, shot by one of

his bodyguards in 2001. It lies empty amidst increasingly overgrown gardens, the

interior preserved as a shrine.

The luxurious Palais de Marbre was built in 1971 according to Palumbo's design as a residence for the Governor of the National Bank, but was later seized by Mobutu. Local Kinuwa call it "the place where Laurent Kabila was killed," who was shot dead by one of his bodyguards in 2001. Today, the building stands empty amid increasingly overgrown gardens, and the interior has been preserved as a kind of memorial.
